Creating capacity – Meeting the needs of an uncertain future

Professor Westwell is the founding director of the newly established Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century. The Centre (Science21) supports decision-making in science education by policy makers, educational leaders, industry and others.
After completing his degree and PhD at Cambridge University, Professor Westwell moved to Oxford University as a research fellow in biological and medical sciences at Lincoln College. He later became deputy director of Oxford's Institute for the Future of the Mind.
In his presentation for the College, Professor Westwell will explore how and why the emerging evidence from research in neuroscience, the cognitive sciences and education needs to be coupled with the experience and expertise of teachers.

Oxford University Centre for Educational Assessment conducts research and international development work in educational assessment. It works collaboratively with other researchers and agencies on the challenges confronting education systems in the quest for global qualifications and standards. The inaugural director of the Centre and Pearson Professor of Educational Assessment is Gordon Stanley who took up appointment in April 2008.
His presentation for the College will draw on his experience and observations of the current curriculum change process in a number of systems across the world. It will focus on the major drivers of this change and the political process which often leaves teachers and practitioners confused about how to respond.
