Dr Glyn Parry
Keynote speaker, 1 Aug

Dr Glyn Parry was born in the north-east of England. He grew up in the town where Billy Elliott was filmed. When he was 12 he came to Australia to live and was encouraged to read and write.

For some years he taught high school English and is currently a teacher-librarian. In 1992, his first book, L.A. Postcards was published to critical acclaim. Since then there have been nine other books for teenagers and children. His first book for adults, Ocean Road, was published in 2007.

Glyn has been appointed to the State Library Board of WA, the National Advisory Council of the ABC, and the Literature Board of the Australia Council. In 2008 he was appointed to the Board of the Western Australian College of Teaching. He is a keenly-sought public speaker and gifted educator. He lives in rural Western Australia in a cottage by the sea.

Catrina Luz-Aniere
Keynote speaker, 31 July

Catrina Luz-Aniere is a qualified teacher who has taught in Perth metropolitan schools, in remote Western Australian schools and in London. Her experiences led her to focus on her teaching passion – sustainability.

Since 1995, Catrina has worked in partnership with children and young people to develop a not-for-profit environmental youth organisation, Millennium Kids Inc, that operates in Australia, Canada, South Africa and Java, Indonesia. At the core of Catrina’s work is the MK Ten Steps – An Inquiry Methodology developed by young people for young people through Millennium Kids. In 2009, she will work with young Western Australians and children in India and South Africa to share ideas and develop student-centered climate change projects.

Catrina believes that teachers can engage their students’ thirst for knowledge by being adventurous, exploring the school community in which they live, and by bringing the classroom alive with connections to the real world, diverse cultures, and the built and natural environment.
