Committees
The Western Australian College of Teaching has a number of committees to carry out specific functions for the College. Committee members include Board members and other members of the profession. Most are chaired by a member of the Board.
Committees are as follows:
- Registration and Membership Committee
- Professional Practice and Conduct Committee
- Finance and Administration Committee
- Communication Committee
- Professional Learning and Standards Committee
- Initial Teacher Education Committee
Registration and Membership Committee
Chaired by Valerie Gould, the registration and membership committee ensures the College administers an efficient and equitable system of registration and membership. Its roles are to:
- provide advice on policies and strategies for teacher registration;
- monitor and resolve issues which arise from the registration process;
- provide the secretariat with advice on registration assessments; and
- ensure consistent and equitable registration of members.
Professional Practice and Conduct Committee
Chaired by Theresa Howe, the professional practice and conduct committee performs the disciplinary function conferred on the College by the Act. Its roles are to:
- consider cases of alleged unprofessional conduct against existing members or applicants for membership;
- carry out preliminary enquiries into allegations of unprofessional conduct;
- recommend formal enquiries regarding a person's application or membership; and
- research precedents relating to cases of unprofessional conduct.
Finance and Administration Committee
Chaired by Audrey Jackson, the finance and administration committee provides the Board and Director with support and guidance in financial matters and to monitor the corporate governance of the College. Its roles are to:
- monitor, report and advise on the College budget and finances;
- provide leadership in the corporate governance of the College including strategic planning and business planning;
- keep the College informed of relevant business practices and business law; and
- provide administrative advice as requested by the Director.
Communication Committee
Chaired by Bruce Hancy, the communication committee provides advice on communication with members and the community to raise the image of teaching. Its roles are to:
- develop a communication strategy;
- develop strategies to promote the College and the teaching profession;
- develop public campaigns in support of the teaching profession;
- celebrate the teaching profession's contribution; and
- promote the value of College membership to ensure that all members understand the purpose and value of belonging to the College.
Professional Learning and Standards Committee
Chaired by Peter Bothe, the professional learning and standards committee provides the Board and Director with support to promote professional standards and ongoing professional learning for teachers. Its roles are to:
- establish and promote professional standards and values relating to teaching in schools;
- develop policies to encourage the development of teachers' skills and knowledge through ongoing professional learning;
- develop strategies for the induction and mentoring of new teachers; and
- identify issues of importance to the teaching profession and, where appropriate, conduct research into these issues.
Initial Teacher Education Committee
Chaired by Barry Kissane, the initial teacher education committee ensures that preservice teacher education programs enable graduates to meet the Western Australian Professional Standards for Teaching. Its roles are to:
- make recommendations to the Board on the approval of preservice teacher education programs;
- confer and collaborate with stakeholders on accreditation policies and procedures;
- work in partnership with tertiary institutions in establishing an accreditation framework;
- ensure linkage between the accreditation framework and the College's professional learning framework;
- consider consistency between the accreditation framework and the Australasian Forum of Teacher Registration and Accredited Authorities Framework for the National Recognition of Approved Preservice Teacher Education Programs;
- develop policy advice on the approval of teacher education programs; and
- ensure consistency and reliability in the process for the approval of preservice teacher education programs.
