A teaching career - getting started

Considering a career in teaching? Every school in Western Australia needs bright, committed and imaginative new graduates. And there’s a wide variety - from Government to Catholic and Independent schools and from early childhood to secondary.

A career in teaching can range from music to maths but, as you set out and take the early steps in your new profession, there’s one thing that won’t change – there’s a lot to absorb and you’ll never stop learning.

All teachers working in Western Australian classrooms must be members of the Western Australian College of Teaching.

Employment requirements:

  • four years of tertiary education including at least one year of full-time teacher education;
  • acceptable English language skills;
  • a Working with Children Check from the Department for Child Protection; and
  • registration with the College - a requirement for all teachers employed in schools K-12 in Western Australia plus any teacher delivering a program to school students as part of an education program.

Some things worth noting:

  • as a recent university graduate entering the teaching profession you will be registered as a provisionally registered teacher;
  • the College annual fee of $70 is tax deductible and is payable by the March 31 every year; and
