The Western Australian College of Teaching has four categories of membership.  The information below will guide you to the category for which you are eligible.

Provisionally Registered Teacher

A Provisionally Registered Teacher has recently graduated from a four-year teacher education degree. Additionally, this category is for those who have taught for less than one year in the past five years.The minimum qualification requirement is four years of completed higher education programs with at least one year being a completed preservice teacher education program in early childhood, primary, middle or secondary education. Provisional registration is valid for three years, subject to the member maintaining their Financial Membership of the College. Provisionally Registered Teachers are encouraged to undertake a professional development program in order to move to registered teacher status.

Registered Teacher

A Registered Teacher has met all requirements for registration, including the qualification requirements of the College, and has been employed as a teacher for at least one year in the past five years. The minimum qualification requirement is four years of completed higher education programs with at least one year being a completed preservice teacher education program in early childhood, primary, middle or secondary education. Registered Teachers remain registered for five years - subject to maintaining their Financial Membership of the College - and are encouraged to undertake a professional development program to renew their registration.

Limited Authority to Teach

An applicant with specialist skills, or a completed teaching qualification that does not meet the requirements for registration as a teacher, and who has been offered employment as a teacher may be granted, in conjunction with a prospective employer, a Limited Authority to Teach.

Associate membership

An Associate member is a teacher or educator who has a teaching qualification, or who has made a significant contribution to education, but does not wish to become a registered teacher. An associate member is not eligible to teach in a Western Australian school.
