Teacher Education Policy

The Western Australian College of Teaching is required to liaise with institutions providing teacher education courses. This ensures that those graduating from the courses are eligible for teacher registration.

There are five universities in Western Australia that provide preservice teacher education programs, and other organisations may seek approval for their teacher education programs for the purposes of teacher registration.

College approval means that a course has met a broad range of criteria. Graduates from these courses will, among other prerequisites specified by the College criteria, have specified periods of supervised classroom experience; meet set literacy and numeracy standards; and have acquired content knowledge relevant to their curriculum and stage of school specialisation.

The College, through its membership of the Australasian Forum of Teacher Registration and Accreditation Authorities, is committed to developing a national framework for recognising teacher education programs.

In September 2009, the College Board approved for use in Western Australian teacher education programs a set of interim national teacher education standards. See below for more details.

Standard for Initial Teacher Education Programs

Maintaining and promoting the standards of the teaching profession through high quality initial teacher education programs is a priority of the Western Australian College of Teaching.

Interim Initial Teacher Education Standards

On 16 September 2009, the College Board approved a set of interim initial teacher education standards for use in accrediting teacher education programs in Western Australia.

These ‘Initial Teacher Education Programs Accreditation Processes and Standards’ are an interim set of standards developed by the College. The program standards are largely based on the work of the Australasian Teacher Regulatory Authorities (ATRA) in consultation with the Australian Council of Deans of Education (ACDE) and under the auspices of the Australian Education Systems Officials Committee (AESOC) Working Group. The College will seek to have any programs accredited through this scheme given full recognition by all ATRA member authorities.

Until such time as a national framework is adopted by all Australian teacher regulatory authorities, the College has adopted these interim standards for Western Australia.

The College is working with the Deans of Western Australian universities and teacher employers to trial the ‘Initial Teacher Education Programs Accreditation Processes and Standards’. Guidelines are being developed to:

  • articulate the common understandings embedded in the standards; and
  • to provide guidance to both teacher education providers and accreditation panels on appropriate interpretations of the standards.
