Register to be a mentor

Do you have well-developed professional knowledge and skills? Enthusiasm for teaching and a willingness to share the expectations, knowledge and practices of the profession? A minimum of three years teaching experience in Western Australia?

The Western Australian College of Teaching is looking for experienced teachers to volunteer to give guidance and support to new teachers.

Becoming a mentor or collegiate support person (CSP) demonstrates evidence of your own leadership in the school community and service to the individual and the teaching profession.

Engaging in this process can be documented and will contribute to the professional learning requirements set out by the College for renewal of membership.

Training to be a mentor

Course content

The period of provisional registration is an acknowledgment by the profession and the College that new teachers are entitled to support and guidance in the early period of their professional employment.

They are required to undergo a period of mentoring for a minimum of 12 months as part of the process to become a fully Registered Teacher. Their mentor's role is to give a clear guide to teaching and provide on-the-job support.

A mentor or collegiate support person (CSP) must be a fully Registered Teacher with a minimum of three years experience. The College maintains a database of mentors who are registered to work with Provisionally Registered Teachers.

The Professional Mentors' Program has been designed to enhance the skills of teachers who are already mentoring PRTs or who aspire to undertake the rewarding role of a teacher mentor.

The College provides these sessions in a variety of locations around the State throughout the year. More sessions will be added to this site shortly. The course covers:

  • The professional role of mentoring
  • Acquiring the skills for mentoring
  • Resources to assist in mentoring
