Music tutors
At its meeting in December 2006, the College Board of Management clarified the need for music tutors to obtain a Limited Authority to Teach.
While the employment of music tutors and music teachers varies greatly from school to school, people employed under some conditions are not ‘teaching’ in terms of the Western Australian College of Teaching Act 2004, and therefore do not require a Limited Authority to Teach.
Limited Authority to Teach is not required where:
- a person is employed by the school, on behalf of parents, to provide additional instrumental tuition;
- the tuition is extra-curriculum and is not taught as part of the Curriculum Framework and is not assessed as part of the student’s school program; and
- the tuition is for individual students or small groups of students.
Limited Authority to Teach is required where:
- a person is employed by the school to teach music to meet the requirements of the Curriculum Framework; and
- a person is employed to teach music to whole class groups or small groups as part of the program for the class.
If you need clarification of the need for a Limited Authority to Teach for any particular situation, please contact the College by email or phone 9221 1300.
